Background
Over the past semester, I've been participating in the Virtual Student Federal Service, an internship program where students are paired with federal offices.
I currently work with the the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, specifically the Southeast Fisheries Science Center.
The Problem Space
The Southeast Fisheries Science center needed improved visuals and animations that could be used during training sessions with divers. Some of the things I had to take into consideration was including fish species that could be found in multiple regions, the timing for underwater surveys, and making sure the environment and coral structures were accurate.
The Result
The training videos I created are currently actively used in presentations and sent out as a resource. I received positive feedback from the senior research associate and fisheries biologist who were the subject matter experts on this project. The videos replaced previous versions that utilized clip art and did not include specific tools used or accurate fish species/environments.
Survey Methodology Video
An excerpt from a video on the research methodology behind counting fish.
Diver Training Video
This video is meant to accompany a training session for divers on how to establish an area to survey as well as the time increments to survey an area.
National Coral Reef Monitoring Program Graphic
I created a template that can be easily updated in Powerpoint for researchers to update with stats on dives, survey results, and sites sampled.
