Background

Overcoast is a music and sound agency that creates custom compositions, sources musical artists, and develops sound design for advertisements and film.

Overcoast came to VCU Brandcenter to ask for input on their branding, website, and how to differentiate themselves stylistically in a small market.

Overcoast's Goals

Competition in this industry is vast with everyone seemingly offering the same thing. We must differentiate Overcoast from the rest through other avenues besides services offered.

The current website does not reflect the story, narrative, style, or offerings of Overcoast entirely. Create a new website that shows Who we are, what we do, and what we’ve done.

The current visual guidelines and logo have been in use for a while and could be refreshed to reflect the personality and style of Overcoast.

The Visual Identity

For the rebrand, we wanted to reflect the bold and dynamic work Overcoast creates. We developed a bright color palette, photo collages, and textured visual elements.

Social Media

I designed three social media story templates in AfterEffects for categories of posts that Overcoast could share including an artist feature, a new work feature, and a new music feature.

Website

I redesigned the home page to mirror the visual identity. To emphasize Overcoast's work on sound design for the sizzle reel, I added a larger, more noticeable 'sound on' button. I also revamped the examples of previous work by creating two filters for service type and industry.

About Page

To simplify the previous version of Overcoast's website, I combined the 'Services' and 'About' pages. I also added photos of their recording studio and created a collage to add visual interest.

Merch Design

As a side project, I also designed 4 t-shirt options to reflect the request for their branding to reflect the fun, unpretentious side of the agency. These designs incorporate imagery of Richmond, Virginia, music, and classic band tees.

Other Merch Ideas

Overcoast makes their own candles as a side project to send as gifts to those they work with. As a team, we brainstormed alternate ideas for products that could be sent to agencies or other clients as well.

Final Thoughts

What we Learned

It was an interesting challenge to figure out how to differentiate a brand when they offer similar services to their competitors. I realized that brand voice and narrative are incredibly important to stand out. Additionally, I enjoyed the challenge of making their website as accessible and clear as possible.

Future Considerations

• Building out a social media campaign
• Experimenting more with UI motion design.

What we Learned

Through this project, I became more familiar with app design and game design.

Future Considerations

In the future, I would like to explore more branding projects and creative coding to design unique and playful interactions and websites.

• Building out the rest of the characters and clues
• Creating alternate plots for different characters as the murderer.
• Potentially expanding to new rooms/settings
